Bungalow Oasis

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Owners of a small South Minneapolis bungalow asked David to help them design a backyard screen porch to replace their aging deck. They envisioned a shady, bug-free space for entertaining friends and for relaxing on the weekends.

David created a post-and-beam-style porch with a spacious interior and abundant views to the backyard garden. It’s flat roof and open joists contrast with the gabled roof of the home giving the porch an arbor-like quality that connects easily to the garden. Deep eaves shelter occupants from sun and rain showers, while the ample roof structure supports the weight of soil and plants above. This “green roof” provides a cooler ambient temperature for the porch and controls storm-water runoff. Rainwater not used by the rooftop plants flows elegantly through copper rain chains and is used to water the garden below.
