2012 Southwest Journal Home Improvement Guide
The Spring 2012 Southwest Journal Home Improvement Guide features columns by Bryan Anderson and Joseph Metzler. Bryan writes about how planning and the choices we make are a factor in “Designing for the Long Haul”. Joe focuses on “The Evolution of the Kitchen” and how that leads to two alternative approaches for creating historically sympathetic kitchens. A copy of the guide is available for download here.
2012 Minneapolis St. Paul Home Tour
The 2012 Minneapolis St. Paul Home Tour is a great opportunity to see three recent SALA projects! Home #10 is the home of Laura Davis & Eric Roberts located on W. Lake of the Isles Parkway in Minneapolis. The addition, designed by Joseph G. Metzler and Steven Buetow with Ken Zehoski, adds a family room, breakfast nook, study, new kitchen, mudroom, master suite, and new children’s bath as well as finishing the basement. Home #36 is the home of Liz LaFond in St. Anthony Park in St. Paul. The addition, designed by Joseph G. Metzler and Bryan Anderson, created a new Arts & Crafts kitchen and mudroom. Home #55 is a creative and energetic re-imagining of a formerly derelict house into three rental units. The project was designed by Tim Fuller. The tour is Saturday April 28 from 10 to 5 and Sunday April 29 from 1 to 5 and is free!
New Appointment to the Minnesota Governor’s Residence Council
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced the appointment of Joseph G. Metzler to the Governor’s Residence Council. The council was established in 1980 to provide more consistent management of the Minnesota Governor’s Residence, a 16,000 square foot home designed by William Channing Whitney. The Residence Council, which has 19 members, develops restoration plans, approves alterations, and solicits contributions for improvements or furnishings for public areas of the building. Joe will serve a 2 year term as the American Institute of Architects member.
AIA MN and Midwest Home magazine’s Emerging Talent of the Year Award Winner
Bryan Anderson, AIA has been named as the 2012 Emerging Talent Award recipient.
AIA Minnesota and Midwest Home magazine’s Emerging Talent of the Year award focuses on the individual architect, licensed for less then 10 years, highlighting their professional achievements and dedication to excellence in the design of single-family homes. Bryan and the 2012 Architect of Distinction will be featured in Midwest Home’s spring issue.

Addition Wins North Central Regional COTY Award
An addition for Carol and Andre Bergeron, won the COTY 2012 North Central Regional Award for Residential Historical Renovation/Restoration. It previously won a 2011 Minnesota COTY Award in the same category. The addition was designed by Joseph G. Metzler with Jared Banks won a 2 for Best Residential Historical Renovation/Restoration. Vujovich Design Build was the winning contractor. The project will be competing for a national COTY award this April in Dallas, TX.

SALA in Rochester!
Come visit SALA at the Rochester Home Show at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester Minnesota. You can find us in the Exhibit Hall at booth #81. The show runs from February 10 to 12, 2012.
SALA principals will also be presenting 2 seminars during the show. On Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 12:30 p.m., Eric Odor, AIA, LEED AP, will be presenting “The Art & Science of Sustainable Design”. Eric will lead a general and specific discussion of the materials, methods & costs of sustainable building as it relates to three recent award-winning SALA projects. With the aid of models and photographs Eric will share his practical experiences with a lake home, a net-zero farmhouse & an urban dwelling on track to be LEED certified.
The following day, at 1:30 p.m., Joseph Metzler, AIA, LEED AP, will be presenting “Making History: Creating Old-Home Character Today”. Joe will focus on the secrets to creating old-home character in a new home or an old-home addition and explain why that recently built “traditional” home doesn’t feel old.

StarTribune Features Award-Winning Addition by SALA
The StarTribune Sunday Homes section featured the SALA Designed Bergeron Addition in “An Arts & Crafts Homage in Minneapolis” on November 27, 2011. The recent Minnesota COTY award-winning project was designed by Joseph G. Metzler with Jared Banks.

Addition Wins MN COTY Award
An historically sympathetic addition designed by Joseph G. Metzler with Jared Banks won a 2011 Minnesota COTY Award for Best Residential Historical Renovation/Restoration. The addition, for Carol and Andre Bergeron, featured a kitchen with a fireplace inglenook and a three quarter bath in the area formerly occupied by the kitchen. The design, skillfully constructed by Vujovich Design Build, incorporates Arts & Crafts woodwork details from the original residence. The Minnesota COTY awards are presented by the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

Wayne Branum at the TRAX GALLERY, Berkeley, CA
Wayne Branum is one of a group of ceramic artists participating in an exhibition on pattern and decoration at the TRAX GALLERY in Berkeley, CA. The show opens Saturday, November 19th, 2011 and is available to see online at, traxgallery.com. Wayne’s work includes a range of forms from the useful pot to containers that have architectural references to his latest figurative statuesque pieces.
